The Borough of Brent, located in north-west London, is one of the city's most diverse neighbourhoods. With more than 20 community centres (so called husayniyyas), several schools and colleges, as well as NGOs, the London borough is also the administrative and financial centre of one of the largest religious networks in the Shia world. In his lecture, Oliver Scharbrodt takes a look at these diaspora networks, their local and transnational activities and connections, and their interactions with the British state and society.
Oliver Scharbrodt's research project "Karbala in London: Transnational Shii Networks between Britain and the Middle East" was funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation as part of the special programme Islam.
